Live Cinema: New Art Form or Box Office Fad?
Monday, March 14
2:00PM - 3:00PM
Austin Convention Center

'Live cinema' events have exploded. In the US, Alamo Drafthouse lead the way with quote-alongs, sing-alongs, dance-alongs in new pop-up locations outside of the theatre space, including recent 'float-along' screenings of Jaws. The UK now sees three-month long immersive productions of Back the the Future, and 800-year old monasteries are turned into Hogwarts. Live scores too are big business, with some of the biggest UK bands dedicating years of development to creating new live soundtracks. Are we witnessing a new convergent art form, or just a way of adding a few dollars to our ticket prices? Supported by UKTI Passport to Export, Arts Council England and BFI Film Audience Network

Pioneering a new entertainment art form, alloying hands-in-the-air clubbing with a night at the movies, DJ Yoda aka Duncan Beiny's AV shows are audio-visual anarchy, cutting the best Sci-Fi movie moments with 80s electro, or YouTube viral hits with contemporary hip-hop. One of the first DJs to turn his hand to rescoring classic films with the esteemed DJ Yoda Goes to the Movies series that began with his version of the Goonies in 2003, Yoda was commissioned by the BFI in 2014 to reprise his trailblazing ways. Presented as part of the BFI’s regular Sonic Cinema event, DJ Yoda Goes to the Sci-Fi Movies was a futuristic alliance of cutting edge music and cinema that cemented his reputation as the master of the form.
Most recently, Yoda made history with the first ever audio visual mix for BBC Radio 6 Music, and worked with Dr Dre on a premiere mix for Apple Music's Beats1 launch in June 2015.Hide the rest

Henri Mazza has been a part of the Alamo Drafthouse since 2003, back when the now legendary theater chain was still a one screen cinema located in the warehouse district of downtown Austin. Working directly under founder Tim League, Henri oversaw the growth of the brand image as they opened 10 locations around Texas and grew the empire to include the Rolling Roadshow, Badass Digest, Mondo Tees, Fantastic Fest and Drafthouse Films. He created many of the signature events the theater has become known for, including the interactive Action Pack screenings of Sing-Alongs and Quote-Alongs, but his biggest claim to fame came in the summer of 2011 when the "Angry Texter Voicemail" PSA he put together quickly received nearly 5 million views online and was featured in major media outlets from The View to Anderson Cooper.Hide the rest
