The Conundrum of Free Will in a Digital World
Do people exert free will when experiences are targeted and personalized to short- and even long-term goals? What are the ethics of choice architecture? And in striving to create relevant experiences, do we lead too much with what we know about people, thus limiting their exploration of the new?
These questions will introduce a debate on "the meaning of free will in the digital age.” As designers with the power to frame problems and choices, what is our responsibility to this question? If we believe in free will, what is our responsibility as designers to create opportunities for greater agency? And ultimately, can designers share a point of view on free will in a digital world?
