Growing the Innovation Economy: Ecuador
Ecuador is a country of enormous and valuable natural resources, ranging from the Galapagos Islands to oil, fishing and agriculture. The Ecuadorian government is making significant investments to build a knowledge-based economy through investments in the higher education of its people and the strategic move from a raw material to finished product economy. This effort to diversify the economy will concomitantly instill a culture of research and innovation within its population. The Change in the Production Matrix will require development of innovative practice to convert the wealth of natural resources into high value products and distribute these into world markets. Strategies to integrate university training, researchers, company collaborators and government policy to identify, develop and commercialize indigenous innovations will be discussed.
