Arcades Are Dead! Or Are They?
It's remarkable how many people are certain that video game arcades died in the 80s. Or at least the 90s. But the reality is that today's arcades are bigger and better than they ever were, and number in the thousands. National chains like Dave & Busters and regional players like Round 1, Main Event and others are showcases for super-sized games, state-of-the-art simulators, and redemption games that allow players to put their skills to the test for prizes ranging from shot glasses and candy to iPads and game consoles. In this panel, some of the leading designers and developers of modern arcade games and attractions will describe the reality of out-of-home gaming in the United States and abroad, laying to rest some of the fiction and fallacies about arcades and giving a glimpse into the future of attractions.
