Gaming for Good: Using Games to Create Change

Sunday, March 15
5:00PM - 6:00PM

There is a growing community of educators, nonprofits and developers who believe that in addition to entertainment value, games can also be used for good; they can educate, they can change perceptions and they can heal. The video game industry is a $66 billion piece of our economy, so how can social marketers take advantage of its popularity? Especially with a smartphone in nearly every pocket and the population of gamers growing older and more diverse (the average gamer is now 31 years old and women make up 48 percent of all gamers). We know that many nonprofits typically don’t have big budgets to make elaborate games nor do they have the expertise to make games that are both educational and fun. This panel will provide case studies of games for good including what works well and what does not, discussion around the pros and cons of re-skinning existing game engines and how to do more with less. We will also cover how to promote and evaluate your game.
