Image Creation and Sharing: Practice vs Policy

Saturday, March 14
12:30PM - 1:30PM

Hyatt Regency Austin
Texas Ballroom 2-3
208 Barton Springs Rd

Every day, millions of images swirl online. The instantaneous exchange of visual tokens has given us the ability to make personal that which is also immense and faceless. Whether they report or distort, are original or stolen, are published once or republished to a viral status, visuals in social media collectively shape our expectations and realities and certainly challenge established rules and practices surrounding visual culture. Solutions once created to safeguard creative work or community standards are found wanting and are often observed in the breach. This panel will analyze wide-ranging current practices, the understanding of which could change future activities and policies, including intellectual property law, ideas about censorship, and terms of service agreements. Instagram, in particular, has been a game-changer in terms of the kinds of images that are shared on a global level, and has raised new questions about the creation, sharing and ownership of visual culture.
