Sparking True Imagination in a Digital Environment
Taking classic old Australian fairytales out of the archives and helping our audience discover their magic, in the digital realm, is what I do at Deakin University Library in Geelong, Australia. In 2013 we installed interactive touch screens to showcase these unique collections. When I explored these fairytales it invoked childhood memories and feelings of wonder and magic. I realised that in order to share these feelings, I needed to demonstrate artistic restraint, whilst making these 1900s fairytales shine in the digital realm. By animating discrete elements of the illustrations, I enhanced, but didn’t overwhelm the experience of the story. I kept the charm, heart and integrity of the works by designing an experience that encouraged the audience to use their imagination.Sparking true imagination whilst retaining the essence of a traditional work is a challenge for any cultural institution, and once achieved we can inspire communities on a new path of discovery and research.
