By the time the rest of the country had only just begun to give props to Houston hip-hop in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, DJ Buddha’s generation had been raised on their hometown’s signature style of beats and rhymes. The undisputed father of the Bayou City’s “screwed-up” sound was Robert Earl Davis, better known by his moniker, DJ Screw. DJ Buddha counts the late legend as one of his influences and is himself now known for his “slowed and chopped” style, paying homage to DJ Screw every time he touches the turntables.
While most of the players from that golden era of Houston hip-hop have faded to almost black, DJ Buddha remains a relevant and essential cog in the city’s hip-hop wheel. His insatiable work ethic and undeniable knack for his craft have quickly gained him fans and respect nationwide. Not only does he show and prove as one of Houston’s most deft DJ’s and executive producers, he possesses the drive and determination it takes to be successful in the music business. He has released over 40 mixtapes independently, securing his standing as one of the most hard-working and respected selectors on the Third Coast.
