TV Blanket Licences: Stitch Up or Opportunity?
UK television broadcasters including the BBC, ITV and Sky have instant access to nearly all of the world’s music under their blanket agreements with music collecting societies. To some, this is a great opportunity for songwriters and artists to promote their music, and it provides a democratic platform where all music receives equal rewards when it is used in television. To others, blanket licenses represent a loss of control and a missed opportunity to command individual synch fees. While blanket licenses in the UK generate significant revenue for music creators, they also generate confusion and debate.
