The news business has been in constant transformation since the internet broke its business model a decade ago. In a world that values scale and high margins, one of the toughest nuts to crack has been local news. Jim Brady has been exploring new local storytelling and business models for almost 20 years at companies like The Washington Post, AOL and Digital First Media. He recently launched a local startup in Philadelphia called Billy Penn, and he'll discuss how he's applying new local content and revenue strategies in a world increasingly focused on civically-minded millennials, mobile and social platforms and event- and membership-based revenue models.

Jim Brady is the CEO of Spirited Media, which operates the mobile news platform Billy Penn in Philadelphia, and intends to soon expand into other cities. Before starting Billy Penn, Jim served as Executive Editor of washingtonpost.com, Editor in Chief of Digital First Media, General Manager of TBD and as head of News and Sports for America Online.
During Jim's tenure at washingtonpost.com, the site won a national Emmy award for its Hurricane Katrina coverage, a Peabody Award for its “Being a Black Man” series, a Knight-Batten Award for Innovations in Journalism, two Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Awards, four Edward R. Murrow Awards for Best Non-Broadcast Affiliated Web Site, and more than 100 White House News Photographers video awards.
Jim is a Past President and current board member of the Online News Association, and also serves on the boards of the American Society for News Editors and the National Press Foundation.Hide the rest
