In the near future interactive devices will be printed rather than assembled. Devices with active components will be created as a single object, rather than assembled from separate mechanical, electrical, and optical parts. Although 3D printing has become synonymous with the creation of throw-away plastic ‘trinkets’, many of the building blocks for advanced functional 3D printing are already in place.

In this talk we discuss our recent work with 3D printing hardware, software, and materials that will make “printed devices” a reality. Topics covered include: printed optical structures for display, sensing, and illumination; printed 3D tags read using see-through imaging; and finally the hardware, software, and material science enabling highly conductive 3D circuitry.
