This 3D printing, four hour long workshop is a maker community (regional / international) driven proposal developed through online submissions of culturally relevant architectural projects within the public domain. This workshop will involve critical thought and catalyze conversations regarding intellectual property, design, and digital media, towards contemporary methods of computerized fabrication and production submitted through an online platform, and utilizes open-access networks to create prints onsite.
Questions for the workshop:
1) Use of 3D printing in Practice / Industry - 3D Printing: focused use for educational platforms and pedagogic learning, either in maker spaces, or institutions
2) Open Source in architecture and design focus with interest on intellectual property and methods.
3) Alternative methods of production and prototyping, inclusive of Digital tooling for architecture and design.
4) Ethical use of computational technologies and the developmental nature of 3D printing
5) Critical Analysis in the plethora of use of 3D printing, 3D computational modelling, and the use for designers and creators for the built environment.
Workshop Structure:
The first 30 - 45 minutes will be introduction and a presentation by the presenters on the current state of the art in mass production and issues of duplication within the fast-growing world of digital technologies, following individual introductions by the participants to the group of their various levels of 3D modelling skills and techniques (a roundtable sharing by the participants). Participants within this introduction will share their own reasons for attending the workshop, and share their professional use of various modelling software.
Afterwards, for 60 minutes, participants will be divided into clusters, whereby various clusters of attendees will be stationed at the individual 3D printers, and given a task to analyze and critically examine a well-known piece of design object, and asked to quickly design and remodel the piece.
Another 30 minutes will be spent on making various iterations of the design pieces, whereby another 30 minutes will be structured around a ""musical chairs"" swap of the digital files.
The last 60 minutes will be used to finalize on the 3D prints, and peer-review critique of the designs and 3D prints made, to evaluate the discourse, experience, and learning points.
