Coaching Fast and Fearlessly
In 2013 and 2014, the Baylor Bears completed one of the most remarkable transformations in college football history: From decades as a southwest also-ran to the brink of a national championship. The architect was Art Briles, a Texas high school football coaching savant turned college offensive genius turned standard-setting visionary for how to reinvent a program and lead a football team. Drive 400 miles northeast of Waco, and you will find Pulaski Academy, home of one of the country’s most innovative high school football coaches: Kevin Kelley, although you might have heard of him as The Coach Who Never Punts. That is just the start of Kelley’s approach to on-field strategy. Join Briles, Kelley and USA TODAY Sports’ George Schroeder for a wide-ranging discussion about strategic disruption in football, from the highest levels of college to the heart of high school — Briles and Kelley will reflect their convention-upending coaching careers and look ahead to what’s next.
