Disrupting Bureaucracy with Social Curation
A legislatively funded outreach initiative turned into an unprecedented story collection project for Austin's Bullock Texas State History Museum. As a cultural institution, we learned to navigate bureaucracy and automate social curation – and we mean REAL curation – with a responsive, accessible, and compliant framework that is yielding unexpected results. Community building activities, interactive programming, and pop-up exhibits are, well, popping up throughout Texas. And a whole host of people are excited about writing, curating, and interpreting their own histories. This project is a game-changer for state government – and the museum community – and has disrupted the way stakeholders think about outreach. The tech community will learn about what curation really means from professional museum curators, and how to pivot curatorial practices amid a malaise of high-profile clients.
