The Link Between Social Media and Box Office
PreAct is an pioneering, long-lead, social media-based film tracking tool that measures the health of a film’s marketing campaign up to 365 days before release. PreAct was developed in-house at premier global talent and literary agency UTA. It began four years ago as a think tank project in the agency’s research department as it attempted to answer the question: Is there a correlation between social media and box office? While researching, unique patterns started to emerge in the data. These trends were eventually quantified and indexed and used by UTA to provide its clients with significant film marketing insight. Seeing an opportunity to help the industry overcome limitations in traditional tracking and establish a new language for film tracking, UTA partnered with leading box office data provider Rentrak to market PreAct to film studios. In less than a year after launching January 2014, more than half the major studios and distribution companies have signed on as subscribers.
