Diversity in Film: The University's Role
Universities across the country and around the world are seeking and developing diverse and impressive talent. However, the filmmaking industry is still largely closed to a small population of individuals who have a degree of access not afforded by even the best education. How can we close the gap between the talent developed in universities and competitive careers in order to provide filmmakers a leg up in a challenging industry, better reflect the diversity supported by universities in the existing industry, and better match increasingly multicultural audiences to multicultural artists?
Universities are uniquely positioned to lead the charge toward a more inclusive & innovative film industry and should adopt that charge as a responsibility to their students and alumni. Can University entities and think tanks meet the demands of an increasingly diverse filmmaker talent pool and increasingly proactive audience base by inventing new models of film finance & distribution?
