Ethics & Future of Crowdfunding for Communities

#sxsw #fundethics

Crowdfunding is grassroots community engagement. Its powerful approach to fundraising and brandraising leverages the speed and reach of the Internet -- as well as advocates’ networks -- to acquire more donors and raise more money for community causes. But donors are realizing not all crowdfunding models are created equally when it comes to ensuring that their donation is used effectively. As crowdfunding grows, so do the ethical questions around legitimate "fundraising" and what constitutes them. This discussion will touch on examples of crowdfunding from self-starting "fund my trip" models to the more established national community foundation-led model with profound local impact that raise over $20 million in one day, and the various ethical questions associated with them. Session participants will work together to build a crowdfunding bill of rights by the end of the discussion.

Miriam Kagan

Sr Principal

Kimbia Inc

As a senior principal at Kimbia, I work with clients to embed strategy as a cornerstone of program and campaign management and drive understanding of factors impacting program performance, constituent relationships, as well as overall market trends. My passion is helping clients use data-driven insight to inform decision-making. Prior to joining Kimbia, I worked at industry-reading agencies and platform providers like Blackbaud, Convio, and Merkle Inc. Back in the day, I cut my teeth at AOL and National Geographic, before deciding to make helping nonprofits succeed by embracing the power of technology and open communications. In my free time, I am also obsessed with everything social media and mobile, and am always wondering: “what’s next” in the marketing and constituent relationships.
I moved to Austin about 2 years ago, and work hard every day on keeping it weird.
