Future 15s: New Media

New to the Film Conference this year, Future 15s are short, intense salvos with each speaker delivering a 15-minute solo performance before being immediately replaced by the following speaker. Come hear Jim Cummings, Alex Winter, and Ralph Echemendia give their thoughts on the how new technology is affecting the film industry.

The Digital Recession by Jim Cummings:
Jim Cummings, essayist and producer at ornana, addresses the future of the film industry, the decreasing value of video, and how independent filmmakers can use the internet to survive in an endlessly inflating market. Ornana's short film, "(notes on) biology", won the jury prize for short animation in 2012 and it has since been seen by over 1 million people in 140 countries.

The Battle for the Digital Frontier by Alex Winter:
We are once again living in the Wild West, in a bloody battle for the future of an unsettled frontier. There are no black and white rules, it's difficult to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys (or the outlaws from the sheriffs), and there is no clear, positive way forward. Alex will explore this challenging, technologically driven new world. How we got here, where we’re going, and the battle for control over our future. Examining the vehemently opposing forces; one side that views the digital landscape as a powerful global community that allows for free speech and the democratization of world culture, and another side that sees only a destructive force that cripples businesses, kills culture, promotes piracy and facilitates dysfunctional social behavior.

Hacking Hollywood by Ralph Echemendia
As Hollywood increasingly incorporates multiple technologies in their production workflows, the threats of leaks and security breaches proliferate. Ralph Echemendia, The Ethical Hacker, will demonstrate how easy it is to gain control of a user’s device. He will monitor (and steal) unreleased content, sensitive information and wow attendees with a freaky-but-true LIVE hacker’s magic show.
