The Muscle Shoals Sound

#sxsw #MuscleShoals

What’s the secret behind the Muscle Shoals Sound, and what took place in the studios where world-famous artists such as Clarence Carter, The Rolling Stones, Cher and Paul Simon recorded hit records backed by the now legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section aka The Swampers. This panel will present original creators of the Muscle Shoals Sound, along with a member of the new generation who is helping create the New Muscle Shoals Sound.

Hear from Guitarist Jimmy Johnson, Fame’s first employee before going on to engineer for the Rolling Stones at Muscle Shoals Sound; bassist David Hood, who also left Fame with Johnson and played with artists ranging from the Staple Singers to Traffic; keyboardist, songwriter, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Spooner Oldham, co-author of “Cry Like a Baby” and “I’m Your Puppet,” among others; Donna Jean Godchaux Thatcher, originally a studio vocalist on Percy Sledge’s “When a Man Loves a Woman” (with Oldham on keyboards) and numerous other sessions before joining the Grateful Dead; and bassist Shonna Tucker, former bassist for the Drive-by Truckers.
