CLE 2: The Cases that Define the Future
Current judicial law provides precedent which influences future behavior and assists resolution of future disputes. The most influential precedents of the recent past and litigations in process will be reviewed and analyzed.
Presenters
Tim Matson is a transactional lawyer, litigator and intellectual property attorney with over 18 years of experience representing musicians, filmmakers, media talent, writers, visual artists and other creators of artistic works in all aspects of their entertainment careers. Tim has handled major publishing, recording, licensing and other agreements in the entertainment industries, as well as IP components of business acquisitions and asset transfers involving patented technologies, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. He has worked with several legacy artists on copyright transfer termination issues, including the firm’s filing of the nation’s first post-1978 notice of termination. Tim also represents emerging and mid-sized businesses as they develop, market and distribute creative content and technology, such as computer software, video games, and on-line products and services. Tim is a frequent lecturer and author on entertainment and IP issues.
Stan Soocher is the long-time Editor-in-Chief of Entertainment Law & Finance. He is also a tenured Associate Professor of Music & Entertainment Industry Studies at the University of Colorado’s Denver Campus. In addition, Stan is an entertainment attorney and a multi-recipient of ASCAP Deems Taylor Awards for Excellence in Music Journalism. In 2012, he taught the course “American Music Goes to Court” at the International College of Beijing in China, where his book They Fought the Law: Rock Music Goes to Court has been published in a Chinese translation edition by Law Press China.
Christine Lepera is a litigator and strategic advisor to clients in the entertainment and media industries. She represents a wide array of celebrities, artists and entertainment companies in matters that span the spectrum of industry disputes and issues, including copyright infringement, unfair competition, trademark infringement, defamation, right of publicity, and contract disputes.
Ms. Lepera is the 2011-2013 Chair of the ABA Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries. She is a frequent author and commentator at industry events, including Digital Hollywood, Cutting Edge, and various Bar Association programs.
