What Can Rock Learn From EDM?

#sxsw #EDMmodel

EDM is undoubtedly the acronym of the moment, with headlines in every major publication, countless new festivals and events springing up. It has even been said that EDM saved the music industry from rock music's sinking profits. Is the EDM model sustainable? What can rock learn from EDM, and vise-versa?

MODERATOR Sean Glass Win Records

Sean Glass has the best calves in New York. For real. He keeps them in
such great shape not by exercising in the traditional ways, although
he was a two sport college athlete (in art school), but by DJing every
day. He’s literally broken both of his feet from DJing.

Sean's well known for not only being a resident and programmer at
fancy pants joints like Top of the Standard (Boom Boom Room) and Soho House but also for creating the hottest Disco House party in New
York--GBH’s Vibrations (featuring Treasure Fingers, The Rapture, Alan
Braxe, Fake Blood, Viceroy, Oliver, Anna Lunoe...). Sean also programs
Brooklyn warehouse extravaganza Bang On! and Percolator, both
definitive of the Bushwick scene that all the cool kids seem to be
talking about. Sean has performed with artists Lady Gaga, James
Murphy, Paul Oakenfold, The Dirty Projectors, The Smiths, Mark Ronson, DJ Premier, Q-Tip Skream, Dillon Francis, Phoenix, Mumford & Sons, Two Door Cinema Club and many more.

Sean, affectionately known by homies as SG, is a multi-disciplinary in the music industry, having worked A&R and Marketing at Universal/Republic Records, Epic Records, Nervous Records, Cornerstone/Fader Mag, Glassnote Records and more.

His newest venture is Win Records, a Dance label partnering with
Glassnote Records (Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, Two Door Cinema Club,
Temper Trap, Childish Gambino) and Downtown Recordings (Miike Snow, Santigold, Major Lazer, Duck Sauce, Justice...) distributed by Sony RED. SG and his calves are equally comfortable in a Madison Avenue board room negotiating contracts as they are in a Bushwick warehouse playing for 5000 ravers.

Trevor Skeet

Trevor McFedries aka Yung Skeeter (formerly known as DJ Skeet Skeet) is an anomaly. Not many people can say they consider Katy Perry, Odd Future, Trash Talk and Skrillex friends but that is normal for “Yung Skeeter” a DJ/Producer who has been associated with most of LA’s emerging music scenes for the last 5 years. He has the exploits in “urban music” making beats for artists like Chris Brown and Azealia Banks while having a top 10 album in 2007 with his rap group Shwayze. And all the punk cred one could muster, playing in hardcore bands for most of his youth, straight edge till this day and not too long ago playing a show in between his friends Trash Talk and Touche Amore. Skeet is still noted to be the first DJ to play Van’s Warped Tour and has been commissioned remixes for everybody from Black Eyed Peas to Broken Social Scene. But most people would tell you he’s one of the DJs responsible for the grown of “EDM” in America alongside his label head Steve Aoki and peers like Diplo, A-Trak and others. Having such roots led long-time friend Katy Perry to reach out and book Skeet as support for her entire “California Dreams” stadium tour. In short Yung Skeeter or “Skeet” is a look into the future of creatives – an endless resource of music, culture and technology – that have lead massive companies like Spotify to bring him on as a full time employee and “DJ in Residence,” and magazines like Paper and Blackbook naming him their DJ of the year. 2013 will see Skeet launching a new radio show alongside Steve Aoki as well as a heavy catalog of content – whether that be mixtapes, original productions, or remixes.
