Sean San José is a writer, director, performer, and new works producer.
San José is part of the leadership of Edith Productions, led by Colman Domingo. San José and Colman Domingo have collaborated together for nearly 30 years, from their time creating new performance works together in San Francisco in the 1990s; to development of Domingo’s early plays for 20+ years; to now, in collaboration on Edith Productions work in theatre, film, and television. Their side by side collaborations reflect the work they have done and vision together for Edith Productions, including: Film: acting together as best friends in the feature film Sing Sing (A24); Television: collaborative writing on Domingo’s in-development television series West Philly, Baby; Theatre (AMC) : developing and Domingo’s hit play Dot (New York Theatre Workshop Lab), as original director.

Sean San José is a new works creator. Now, in the first years as the Lead Director (Artistic Director) of the Magic Theatre in San Francisco, the spaces are filled with Resident Companies and Artists, all rightfully centering People of Color throughout the organization. Already the new team at the Magic Theatre has premiered works from Tongo Eisen-Martin, Roger Guenveur Smith, Bennett Fisher, Luis Alfaro, Playwright-In-Residence Star Finch, Marc Anthony Thompson (Chocolate Genius Inc.), with new works to come from Ashley Smiley, Virginia Grise and lead members of Quetzal, Naomi Iizuka, Richard Montoya, and even more. This output is the largest collection of new works by People of Color in one space in the Bay Area, all during a time where theatre is said to be struggling proving that possibilities remain endless.

San José has been proudly rooted in San Francisco, where is a co-founder of Campo Santo, a new performances company for People of Color in San Francisco. Founded in 1996, Campo Santo is an award-winning group committed to developing new performance and to nurturing People of Color centered new audiences and has premiered over 100 new pieces. For 15 years he was the Program Director of Performance for Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco’s oldest alternative arts space. He co-created Alma Delfina Group-Teatro Contra el SIDA and “Pieces of the Quilt,” a collection of 50+ short plays confronting the human face of AIDS, with writers including: Edward Albee, Danny Hoch, Rhodessa Jones, Tony Kushner, Ntozake Shange, and many more.
