Dr. McCarthy has served as Director for the Giant Magellan Telescope Organization since 2008 and most recently as Interim President, helping to define the science mission and leading the Project Management Team through the PDR and cost reviews. He is a Staff Astronomer at the Observatories of the Carnegie Institution and is known for his work on the evolution of galaxies and cosmic radio sources. He has served in an advisory capacity to the National Science Foundation and NASA for several large ground- and space-based observatories and was involved in the development of the newest panchromatic imager, Wide Field Camera 3 that was installed on the Hubble Space Telescope in 2009. He has served as Chair of the NSF NOAO Program Review Panel, the Hubble Space Telescope Users Committee, the HST Time Allocation Committee, and the Spitzer Time Allocation Committee.
