Return of the Digital Music Royalty Apocalypse
The music streaming marketplace is almost twenty years old, yet in all that time not a single internet music service has ever posted a profit. Is it possible that this is due to mismanagement by every streaming service? Or is the rent just too damn high? This presentation will revisit and update the Digital Music Performance Royalty Apocalypse presentation given at SXSW three years ago, and will discuss the complex web of music licensing issues facing streaming services as well as recent developments affecting the digital music market, including recent Copyright Royalty Board rate proceedings, and the DOJ's review of the ASCAP and BMI consent decrees governing music performance licenses.
Programming descriptions are generated by participants and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SXSW.
