I’m a Filmmaker, Not a Minority Filmmaker

Mar 13, 2017

2:00pm – 3:00pm CT

Do doc funders and programmers peg filmmakers into token diversity metrics? Does an African American filmmaker always have to produce films about race, or a lesbian about LGBTQ issues? How do filmmakers break free of expectations to tell the stories that matter to them? Join Noland Walker, co-curator of the PBS series Independent Lens, Darius Clark Monroe, director of the feature documentary Evolution of a Criminal, and Geeta V. Patel, producer and director of Meet the Patels, for a frank conversation about the limits that perceptions of identity impose on the stories minority filmmakers tell.

Programming descriptions are generated by participants and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SXSW.
