Compulsory License Today, Direct License Tomorrow?

If you and I agree on the price of a digital stream, what is the future of the compulsory license? This panel explores the future of this important, yet underrated music right in the digital music economy: the mechanical right. Created during the era of piano scrolls, the mechanical is one of the few rights available for compulsory licensing under U.S. copyright law and a hot topic in the wake of lawsuits, governmental scrutiny, and the trend of opting out and cutting direct deals with publishers, initiated by services like Apple and Pandora. In this session, industry stakeholders offer perspectives on the mechanical right and debate the future of compulsory license.
