As parents navigate entertainment for their children, they want to know what messages kids are receiving from pop culture, and how that impacts their emotional, academic, and life success. Overwhelmingly, parents say how women/girls and men/boys are portrayed on screen is a critical piece of information that is currently unavailable. This panel will explore research from Common Sense about how media affects kids’ gender-related beliefs and behaviors, what the entertainment industry can do about it, and discuss a groundbreaking tool to evaluate and identify media that shows body image and gender roles in a realistic light. The goal: develop a mainstream Bechdel test for a modern era.
