Fighting Fear with Design: Immigrants, Refugees and Healthcare

Mar 12, 2017

3:15pm – 4:15pm CT

A number of immigrants and refugees in the U.S. are frightened to seek medical care or disclose their identities to healthcare providers. In the days after the White House’s new immigration policies banning immigrants from certain countries, there have been stories from physicians of patients fearing that they might not get treated or possibly be sent to a government authority.

Join us for an interactive session where we brainstorm and rapidly prototype a symbol or phrase or icon that conveys safety for vulnerable patients. This design will be represented in pinback buttons that participants can immediately wear at SXSW. We will start building the buttons right at the SXSW Social Good Hub. We need your help to design a symbol and a related hashtag campaign that will raise awareness of this issue and show support for immigrants and refugees who seek treatment in clinics, emergency rooms and hospitals.

This event is part of the Social Good Hub, a creative content venue curated and produced by SXSW Eco. See the full schedule of programming and special events at sxsw.com/socialgood.

Programming descriptions are generated by participants and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of SXSW.
