Facebook, Twitter, Google, and many more have just recently embraced a technology from 1987, why?

What happened to make a 30 year old technology the most relevant media format of the next generation and how is this format going to change everything?

GIFs started with "under construction" animations on websites from the 90s but the history of “GIFs" goes back much further. The average gif is about 5 seconds which non-coincidentally is the average length of a movie scene, the length of a sports highlight, the time it takes to read a sentence, the length of preroll on a YouTube video. 5 seconds is the lego block of human expression.

Founder/CEO of Giphy the first gif search engine dedicated to organizing all human expression in a format suited specifically for that purpose will describe the history and present of gifs as well as the coming revolution that will change every aspect of the way we communicate, consume media, and express ourselves.
