Personal Touch: New Boundaries of Game Interaction
In this panel Curator Paulien Dresscher and Game Developer Niki Smit expand the boundaries of games and interaction by focusing on the human expression at large: voice, touch, breath etc. By using numerous examples in which alternative game controllers are explored, the space between the virtual and the physical is redefined and a new area of creativity and interactivity will be sketched. Simultaneously, chances and possibilities of these new modes of play will be discussed on the level of cognitive and emotional development and meaningful interaction. The game DEEP, a meditative and psychoactive VR game that is controlled by breathing developed by Owen Harris and Niki Smit, is one of the key examples of this panel. In this game players wear the Oculus Rift and a DEEP controller to explore a beautiful and mysterious undersea world. The game sweeps users into its relaxing embrace and teaches them yogic breathing techniques that can release stress, anxiety and mild depression.
