I'm a professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, and an affiliated faculty member at NYU's Center for Urban Science+Progress, and at NYU's Center for Data Science.

My research is about how digital technologies transform business, government and civil society. I've published over 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed academic journals and conferences. I wrote my first book, "The Sharing Economy," last summer, it comes out in June 2016. (Search for it on Amazon.) Lots of fine people have given me lots of fine grants and awards. I spend time helping government at all levels think through digital. (This includes Congressional testimony and input to a variety of city, state and federal government agencies, including the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, the National Economic Council and the Federal Trade Commission.) I also do lots of fun stuff with the World Economic Forum.

I've published about 20 op-eds in the last 4 years, most of which are about the sharing economy, although I wrote a fair bit in support of Facebook during their post-IPO dark days in 2012. I'm a member of the City of New York's Technology Advisory Group, and am also an advisor to OuiShare, the National League of Cities, and the Center for Global Enterprise.

Nick is a General Manager at Union Square Ventures, where he invests in new web and mobile platforms, works with USV portfolio companies, and leads USV's efforts on public policy and regulatory issues that impact open innovation the health of the web. Previously, he led an incubator for technology & media businesses at OpenPlans, which, among other things, pioneered the open311 web standard, founded the largest open source project in the public transit space, and built NYC's real-time bus data platform. Nick has present & past academic affiliations at the Berkman Center for Internet Society at Harvard Law School and at the MIT Media Lab, and is on the advisory boards of the Data & Society Institute, the Data-Smart City Solutions initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, the Tumml Urban Ventures Accelerator, Living Cities, and Code for America. He has a degree in Urban Studies from Stanford University.
