John Brownstein, Ph.D. is Professor of Pediatrics and Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School and is the Chief Innovation Officer of Boston Children’s Hospital. He also directs the Computational Epidemiology Group at the Children’s Hospital Informatics Program in Boston. He was trained as an epidemiologist at Yale University. Overall, his research agenda aims to have translation impact on the surveillance, control and prevention of disease. He has been at the forefront of the development and application of digital health tools including HealthMap.org, an internet-based global infectious disease intelligence system. The system is in use by millions each year including the CDC, WHO, DHS, DOD, HHS, and EU, and has been recognized by the National Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. Dr. Brownstein has advised the World Health Organization, Institute of Medicine, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the White House on real-time public health surveillance. He was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government to outstanding scientists and engineers. Dr. Brownstein is also the official advisor to Uber on healthcare application. He has authored over 170 peer-reviewed articles on epidemiology and public health. Jordan Shlain MD is a physician, entrepreneur, a healthcare systems designer and writer. He is the founder of Healthloop, a patient engagement software company that gives doctors a technology super-power while keeping patients in the loop throughout their medical care. Dr. Shlain also presides over medical offices in San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Los Angeles consisting of internal medicine, pediatrics and naturopathic medicine. Dr. Shlain was appointed health commissioner of the San Francisco Health Services System Board by Mayor Gavin Newsom and currently sits on the board of the bi-partisan Washington DC policy Hope Street Group.
Dr. Shlain received his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School and completed his clinical training at California Pacific Medical Center in conjunction with UCSF. His undergraduate work was at University of California at Berkeley in anatomy and physiology. After graduating university, and before medical school, Dr. Shlain worked as a high school teacher in western Kenya for Harvard affiliated WorldTeach where he taught chemistry, physics and biology in Swahili.
His leadership has emphasized a fundamental redesign of how healthcare is delivered, utilized and understood in the context of proactive communication, individualized surveillance, shared-decision making, on-demand access and the highest quality specialty network in the US. He recently started Tincture, an online publication to bring bold ideas in healthcare into the narrative. Dr. Shlain is at the epicenter of healthcare transformation; where doctors, insurance companies, hospital systems, software, big data and artificial intelligence are gathering. He serves as an advisor to venture and private equity funds looking to invest in the impending transformation in healthcare.
