Municipal Policing: Transparency, Truth and Trust
Police need the trust and support of local citizens. However, their main source of information about crime and policing is the local news – media outlets which are pressured to get stories out quickly and without an opportunity to dig into the facts due to the needs of ongoing investigations. When Chief Ed Flynn came to Milwaukee, he recognized the MPD needed to overcome image and communication problems to foster a collaborative, positive relationship with the community. By leveraging, versus admonishing, smartphones, social media and digital technology, the MPD is able to establish a direct, transparent, productive method for building trust with the community and policing more effectively.
