Tabloids Taking Over: How the Daily Mail Won

Monday, March 14
12:30PM - 1:30PM

Hilton Austin Downtown
Salon G
500 E 4th St

In this solo presentation, Michael Bodansky will use the principles of Behavioural Science and psychology - namely System 1 and System 2 thinking - to explain how:

- Tabloid news has triumphed over broadsheet or 'quality news'

- How the Mail Online became the most read online news website

- Why tabloids like the Daily Mail and The Sun continue to outsell 'quality' or 'serious' newspapers in the UK like The Guardian, Daily Telegraph and The Times

- Sensationalism and groupthink among newspapers gives us a skewed view of the world, and makes us misspend on healthcare, aviation, terrorism, education, immigration and cancer

- How 'System 1' attitudes to news has changed UK journalism from a news to a commercial enterprise
