Amy Schmitz Weiss is an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University. She has a Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. She was the 2014-2015 recipient of the Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education by the Online News Association. Her project investigated air quality in San Diego using open-source electronic sensors, “Investigating Air Quality in San Diego: A Live News Experiment in the Power of Sensor Journalism in Covering the Environment.”

She has an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin, and B.A. in Journalism and Spanish from Butler University. She teaches journalism courses in basic writing and editing, multimedia, web design, data journalism, and mobile journalism. Her research interests include online journalism, media sociology, news production, multimedia journalism, and international communication.

Lily Bui is ​an M.S. candidate for MIT's Comparative Media Studies. Her interests lay at the intersection of sensor technology, urban design, participatory science, and public media.

She works for MIT's Civic Data Design Lab, which borrows from the traditions of science and design to communicate data to new audiences; Harvard Graduate School of Design's Responsive Environments and Artifacts Lab (REAL), which pursues the design of digital, virtual, and physical worlds; and iSeeChange, a community climate change conversation rooted in public media and citizen science. She has also done work for MIT's Senseable City Lab, which explores how sensor technology interacts with the urban environment; ArchiMedia, a writing and rhetoric lab that explores various aspects of science communications; and OpenDocLab, a center of documentary research, reflection, and experimentation. Recently, she served as an MIT Public Service Fellow at SensingCity, a smart city initiative in Christchurch, New Zealand.
