Sports and the Sharing Economy
Outdoor adventure and endurance sports are rapidly gaining in popularity, from the exponential growth of triathlon participation over the past decade to cycling’s emerging status as “the new golf.” But the costs of gear are significant and routinely prevent would-be participants from giving these sports a try. As Mike Jaquet, the CMO of U.S. Ski and Snowboard, observed to one of our panelists, “we’ve got ten issues [when it comes to recruiting participants], and nine of them are the cost of equipment.” The fast rise of the sharing economy in the United States and across the world is no longer limited to home-sharing and ride-sharing, and now it is changing the sports industry for the better.
