Alex has been playing, recording, and writing about music for over 30 years.
He is a Senior Contributor with Tape Op magazine, and writes for Premier Guitar, and Reverb.com.
His studio, Seriously Adequate, is a linchpin of the community, but has also been involved in many international releases. It is a fully functional, one room studio for hire, and a production room, but has built it's reputation as a comfortable overdub space for finishing projects. Budget has always been a secondary consideration to getting the record made.
Alex is an active musician who has played in various bands over the years, most notably the pop groups Fan Modine, and Violet Vector & The Lovely Lovelies, as well as the experimental noise rock bands Libraness, and Prisms. Currently he plays in the Psych Pop band Lacy Jags.
For 13 years he has worked with The Future of Music Coalition, a Washington DC based think tank that studies the intersection of law, policy, technology, and music. FMC focuses on many issues related, but not limited to Net Neutrality, Low Power FM, Internet Radio, and Radio Consolidation, to copyright and music monetization in the digital age, but Alex's focus is how health obstacles affect the working musician. In 2005, with the aid of a Cummings Grant, the Health Insurance Navigation Tool (HINT) was developed to address the troubling state of health insurance in the US, how it affects artists, and dispense free advice.
In addition to appearing on and moderating various panels (SXSW '06-'014; Pop Montreal '06; CMJ '06; FMC Policy Summits '03-'012; PopAsheville '07-'09; Six Points Music Festival '07; San Francisco Tech Summit '11; St. Louis VLAA '09; TapeOpCon '04-'08; Potluck Audio Conference '08-'14), he has attended music festivals all over the US, Canada, and Europe, and has partnered with labels, and publications, to promote Northern European music in the United States. He has a B.A. in English from The University Of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
