One common problem when making games is music: Every game needs it and it has to be good, but music is generally not a developer's core focus. As developers, we rarely feel that we can afford to hire full-time sound/music people, and thus, since no one is responsible for it, music gets tacked on fairly late in the process. Music also entails a lot of fuzzy concerns: Is the composer entitled to royalties with every new platform release of the game? By default, yes. Does the developer know this? No. Does the developer become infuriated with every new invoice "for nothing" from the composer? Yes... and so on. Brjann Sigurgeirsson explains the win-win deal and tells the remarkable story behind the official soundtrack of their multiple GOTY award-winning game SteamWorld Heist, how the music helped shape and market the game, and how it didn't cost Image & Form a single penny.
