Maurice Middleberg is the Executive Director of Free the Slaves, a global leader in the fight to eradicate modern day slavery. The mission of Free the Slaves is to liberate slaves and change the conditions that allow slavery to exist. Free the Slaves focuses its efforts on eradicating slavery in highly vulnerable communities in the countries where slavery is most prevalent. The work of Free the Slaves has led to the liberation of more than 10,000 people from slavery and building sustainable resistance to slavery in thousands of communities in Asia, Africa and South America. Mr. Middleberg has overall responsibility for supporting the dedicated staff of Free the Slaves in their efforts to eradicate slavery, as well as serving as the principal representative of the organization to diverse audiences.

Mr. Middleberg’s career spans more than 33 years of work in global health, social justice and international development. He has held senior and executive positions at CARE (Director, Health and Population), the Global Health Council (VP-Public Policy), EngenderHealth (Executive Vice President) and IntraHealth (VP-Global Policy), as well as working for the U.S. Agency for International Development. His professional experience has taken him to dozens of countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
