Born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam, Suboi is the first successful Vietnamese female rapper. She became a fan of hip hop music at the age of 14 and improved her English by listening and rapping along to famous American rappers such as Eminem and Mos Def. Soon after, she began to compose and perform as a rapper in a nu-metal band at 15. She then quickly became a well-recognized and respected rapper from the Vietnamese underground scene. Today, she has over 1.2 million fans on Facebook and is considered Vietnam’s “Queen of Hip-Hop". Living under a communist regime as a rapper isn’t easy but she has been able to bypass censorship by relying on metaphorical lyrics and wordplay, all with a lightning quick flow. She has been profiled by VICE, the Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Beast, among many others.
