Biomaterials, Nanotech and the Future of Bioengineering

Monday, March 16
11:00AM - 12:00PM

JW Marriott
Salon 5-6
110 E 2nd St

Joi Ito will lead a conversation with Dr. Langer about the future of biomedical research and startups and why it's not a question of whether we all need to learn about biology but when. For his part, Dr. Langer will discuss how biomaterials are, and will continue to, change our lives in important ways. One area involves the creation of new nanoparticles that can be targeted to tumors which are providing new ways of treating cancer+other diseases. Another area involves implantable microchips that can contain drugs and that may be able to deliver these drugs by remote control. And a third area is tissue engineering-where biomaterials can be combined w mammalian cells such as stem cells-to make new skin for burn victims and someday virtually any tissue or organ such as cartilage or even new spinal cords for people who are paralyzed.
