The Risk and Return of African Startups
Across the globe, investing in tech startups has become the new ‘gold rush’ for finding the next big idea and emerging markets are no different. In Africa, Mpesa has become a popular story among impact investors and Afro-optimists as a sign of African innovation and proof that disruptive ideas can come from anywhere. But are investors ready to bet big on tech startups in emerging markets? Or are we still waiting for the next Infosys or Alibaba to really excite western interests?
This session will address the following questions: Is there too much hype around tech startups in emerging markets? Are emerging markets ready for angel investment and/or venture capital? Would you invest your own money in emerging markets?
