Music as Personalized Medicine: Experiment at SXSW
Doctors recommend physical activity for a minimum of 3 hours per week for health benefits. But there is another activity the average individual engages in for approximately 18 hours per week that has significant effects on physiology and well being: listening to music. A wealth of scientific evidence demonstrates that music has a measurable impact on the body and mind, and its characteristics such as the tempo, rhythm and structure can modulate neural pathways that are affected in diseases and also impacted by drugs. Imagine if the right kind of music could reduce your stress, lower your blood pressure or cure you of insomnia, pain or depression. This session will pilot a new technology and begin the largest living experiment to analyze how the music you’re listening to impacts your health.
