We Are Mapping Your World, Inside: What's Private?
What if every step you took was mapped? Not just outside, but also inside. The stairway to your apartment. The elevator to your office. Your route through the mall. The column you stand by while waiting for coffee. The bar where everyone congregates after work. Your kitchen.
Technology developed to locate firefighters and soldiers is being implemented on mobile devices to discover building maps. Your data – combined with data from your friends and neighbors – creates detailed indoor maps. That's awesome and powerful in a lot of ways. The maps can be used to navigate and to locate people. We are safer (911 - you're on floor 8). But the map may be disturbing to some. It's built by collecting data all the time. Every step you take. What map data should be exposed? Just public buildings? My home?
We are mapping the world. Every building, corridor, and gathering space. It will make the world safer, but it opens up a dilemma. Privacy versus safety, efficiency, fun. What are the rules?
