Sex, Lies, and the Internet
"The Internet hates women," is the insight Adam Savage, co-host of Mythbusters, gave his teenage boys as they started to surf the web on their own. He explained that if they're not part of the solution, they might very well be part of the problem. It's true, some people online clearly do hate women, and their hostile and harassing behavior has turned some of the web into an unsafe workplace and an unequal public space.
While many of the panelists (Amanda Hess of Slate.com, Allyson Kapin of Women Who Tech and Rad Campaign, Rinku Sen of Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation and Colorlines, and Emily May of Hollaback!) have examples of online harassment that are too numerous to recount, none of that makes them exceptional. It just makes them, and many others, women with an Internet connection. This panel will wrestle with how to fight online harassment and mob mentality, and why this issue matters to all of us.
