Most people assume that freedom of speech rules in the US, but if government censorship doesn’t exist in America, corporate censorship very much does: Hollywood has long censored itself to avoid government intervention but cinema chains often take that a step further by not wanting to exhibit certain kinds of movies – usually films made exclusively for adults, with an NC-17 rating. The move by theatre chains to get teenage dollars has incentivized Hollywood to shun making movies for grown-ups, as BBC Culture deputy editor Christian Blauvelt will explain in a presentation that questions whether a free market can lead to free expression.
