Protecting Your Game IP Without Alienating Users
This session will offer practical advice regarding the protection and enforcement of copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual property (IP) rights in online and mobile games. I will address common issues that gaming companies face in protecting their IP, such as dealing with websites that offer counterfeit in-game currency or hacking tools and scripts, and mobile applications designed to circumvent or enhance game features in violation of your terms of use. I will also discuss choosing your enforcement battles in order to minimize legal fees and avoid alienating your users. Specifically, I will address the pros and cons of preventing users from posting videos of their gameplay on YouTube, prohibiting users from publicly posting tips and tricks that border on cheating, proactively enforcing your rights versus waiting until the infringement is brought to your attention, and responding to fans who create art or fan pages based on your intellectual property.
