Unfortunately for all of us, rap as a genre isn’t usually associated with vulnerability, honesty, and nuance. So when an artist like milo comes along, it begins to challenge all of our preconceived notions of what it means to be a rap artist. In today’s hip-hop landscape, many claim to be ‘different’ but very few can draw from experiences as unique as having grown up a young black man in or using rap money to pay his way through his philosophy curriculum at a small liberal arts college in Wisconsin. While many in the mainstream of music journalism stay busy looking for the next big thing in all the usual places, milo’s work has been featured in places like Forbes Magazine and the Johns Hopkins University Press. He brings the earnestness and introspection of a folk musician together with sounds that come from the forefront of electronic music. His first release on Hellfyre Club, the double EP ‘Things that Happen at Day’ and ‘Things that Happen at Night’ have made the sort of impact that the genre hasn’t seen since Aesop Rock’s ‘Float’ or Busdriver’s ‘Temporary Forever’
