How to Create Awesome Culture in Remote Teams

Last year, Yahoo announced that they were banning working from home. The reasoning? According to the memo: "Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home."

Sure, face-to-face connection has many benefits. But who's to say we can't make these connections or come up with great ideas online? The Phuse team is distributed across the globe and we've seen the productivity, creativity, and gains made from working—well—wherever we want.

In this informal discussion, we'll cover how we build our team; the tools we use to stay connected and foster close professional relationships; how we keep everyone accountable; and how we create stellar company culture. Throughout our Core Conversation, we encourage you to share any experiences, questions or advice you have on remote work culture so we can all work better and happier.

James Costa

Founder & Creative Dir

The Phuse

James is the founder and creative director of The Phuse, an international team of designers and front-end developers that craft websites, interfaces, and brands. When he’s not trying to find a good movie on Canadian Netflix, James can be found working with his team to improve processes, raise the bar for work, and assist clients to develop and execute ideas. As a proud Torontonian, James is also an organizer behind NASA’s Space Apps Challenge in Toronto, co-founded Positive Gear, an organization that speaks and works with youth to empower them towards positive change, and directs the media and advertising department for the Trek for Teens Foundation, a non-profit that raises funds and awareness for youth homelessness. Most importantly, James is a father to a five year old who regularly photobombs his client video chats.
