Welcome to a workshop on Transformational Design: design that transforms human experience and culture in new and meaningful ways.

Many existing User Experience Design (UXD) techniques urge you take design cues from users before designing. But as Ford famously summed up: “If I asked people what they wanted, they would have told me a faster horse!” In this workshop we launch an alternative: a new design that shows how to transform experience by playing an exploratory process of exchange and discovery.

In this workshop we introduce three techniques: The Four Foundations of Mindfulness, the Experience Canvas, and the Transformational Design Game. Using these techniques you will learn how to express experiential phenomena such as feelings, sensations, emotions, and habits. Then working collaboratively you will harness these expressions of experience to develop an open-ended design process that can elevate your everyday work and practice.

[9:30-10:00]
Daniel Rosenberg, PhD Candidate at MIT, will begin the session with a talk titled: Beyond UXD: Transformational Design.

Assoc Dir of Invention

Deutsch LA

Christine has been called a "Digital Swiss Army Knife," but that's only half the story. As the Associate Director of Invention at Deutsch LA, she leverages her expertise in architecture, design, and computing to produce physical products and digital services that combine visionary thinking with nascent consumer desires. Previously, she was Creative Director at Re:Imagine Group and a research fellow at MIT's SENSEable City Lab. There, she led the project "The Copenhagen Wheel": a sensor-enabled electric bike that won a James Dyson industrial design award, and earned her a place on Postscapes' "Top 100 Internet of Things Thinkers."
